This table includes the list of characters permitted in the personal password.

By using these characters you ensure full compatibility with major client e-mails (e.g. Eudora, Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird) according to the standard Post Office Protocol version 3, which is one of the possible access methods to the University institutional e-mail account.

All characters used most frequently in passwords that are not supported by the POP3 standard include accented letters. The graphic password analysis system in any case reports any passwords containing characters that are not compatible with the POP3 standard as soon as you enter it.

What is the level of security of my password?

The first step to protecting your on-line operations is to create a safe password, which is difficult for criminals or programmes to break. To help you choose a safe password we have adopted a function that shows the level of security of your password as you create it.

Suggestions for creating a safe password:

• Include letters and numbers
• Mix capitals and lower-case letters
• Use characters other than letters and numbers
• Don't use a password containing your personal information: name, date of birth, etc...
• Don't use words or acronyms that can be found in the dictionary
• Don't use sequences of keys on the keyboard (asdf) or sequences of numbers (1234)
• Don't repeat characters (aa11)
• Think of a simple phrase to remember. For example: "My son Andrew is three years old". Taking the first letter of each word, you have "msaityo". To make it more complex you may use capital letters and lower-case letters: "MsAi3yo". Finally, you can replace letters with similar symbols: "Ms@i3ya"
• Don't use a password that has already been used in examples of how to choose a safe password

Suggestions for keeping your password safe:

• Don't tell anyone your password, including your colleagues, relatives, etc.
• Never write your password on post-its or loose papers
• Never send your password by e-mail, even if the person requesting it seems to be your bank or the system staff
• Never use the same password to register with different systems
• Periodically check your current password and change it with a new one several times a year
